Pseudolus 275-277 [1-6-2012]

Today I read pages 275 - 276 of Pseudolus. The play starts with Pseudolus begging Calidorus to tell him what is wrong with him. Calidorus has for days now appeared more dead then alive holding a letter in his hands and crying his eyes out. He won't talk to anyone and Pseudolus really wants to know what is making Calidorus so miserable. Calidorus tells Pseudolus that hes serving a sentence from love. He hands Pseudolus the letter but Pseudolus just sees chicken scratch on the paper compared to Calidorus's view of "the lovely letters of this lovely letter written in such a lovely hand." Calidorus thinks that Pseudolus is just making fun of the letter because he said he couldn't read it. He tells him either to read the letter or hand it back. Pseudolus chooses to read the letter. Its a letter from Calidorus's girlfriend sending him wishes in wood.

Dou E told Dou that Mrs. Cai is older now and has no one left to look out for her. Dou E asked her father to care for her mother-in-law. After Dou E exits Dou starts working on the case right after. At the break of dawn he ordered his servant to call the local officers and all those concerned in the case of Dou E. Dou then lets the people know that Donkey was the real Killer and he must be punished horribly for his crime and falsely accusing Dou E.

Snow in Midsummer 458-459 [1-3-2012]

Today I read pages 458 - 459 of Snow in Midsummer. Dou begins weeping about what has happened to his daughter. Dou E's case reminds Dou of a story in the Han Dynasty where a widow whose mother-in-law hung herself and whose sister-in-law accused her of murdering the women. She was executed by because of her unjust death there was no rain in that district for three years. After Lord Yu changed the verdict, killed a bull, and sacrificed at her grave it started rain really hard. Since Dou E's case is very similar Dou plans to right this wrong for his daughter the very next day.

Snow in Midsummer 457-458 [1-2-2012]

Today I read pages 457 - 458 of Snow in Midsummer. The vows that Dou E had made before she was executed that state if she was innocent when the sword took of her head not a drop of blood would stain the ground, Next, even though it was midsummer Heaven would send down three feet of snow to cover her body, and lastly, the district would suffer three years' drought. All of these vows came true after Dou E was executed. Dou E then tells her father to cut Donkey into pieces and avenge her wrong.

Snow in Midsummer 457-458 [12-23-2011]

Today I read pages 457 - 458 of Snow in Midsummer. Dou asks Dou E if shes the girl accused of murdering her father-in-law and Dou E tells him she is. Dou then begins lecturing Dou E on what shes done and demands that she tells him the truth and if she as much as says one false word he'll send her to the tutelary god so her spirit can never re-enter human form and she will stay a "hungry ghost forever in the shades." Dou E told him the whole story. Every bit of it. She told him that she wasn't actually the murderer.

Snow in Midsummer 456-457 [12-22-2011]

Today I read pages 456 - 457 of Snow in Midsummer. Dou E is dead and her father doesn't know it yet so she decides to visit him in his dreams. Dou wakes up and continues with his cases. Dou E keeps sending him signs to let him know that there is a ghost in the room. The light flickers every time Dou puts Dou E's file back to the bottom and when the light goes bright again her file keeps appearing on top of the pile. When Dou realizes Dou E asks if she can bow to her father. Dou E told him about her name being changed by Mrs. Cai from Duanyun to Dou E. Dou is in shock.

Today I read pages 455 - 456 of Snow in Midsummer. Act 4 begins with Dou, Dou E's father. His is now a counsellor for state affairs in the Imperial Secretariat. He has the sword of authority and golden tally which give him the power to punish corrupt officials without first reporting to the throne. As Dou was going through some cases he had ran across Dou E's case but since it was already dealt with he puts it at the bottom of his pile and falls asleep on his desk.

Snow in Midsummer 453-455 [12-20-2011]

Today I read pages 453 - 455 of Snow in Midsummer. Dou E is led on in a cangue for her execution. She yells for people to hear her say that shes not a criminal. She then asks the executioner for a favor. She asks him to take her the back way so her mother in law doesn't see her. This is because if her mother in law saw her in chains being led to her death it would very well be the death of her mother in law. However it was to late for that as her mother in law saw her. Dou E then told her mother in law about how donkey told her he put some more salt and vinegar in the soup and that he put the poison in it but didn't think his father would drink it and intended for Mrs. Cai to drink it so Dou E would be forced to marry him. But after Donkeys father died from the soup he wanted revenge so he dragged Dou E down to court and to keep her mother in law from suffering she confessed to a murder that she didn't commit. It begins to snow and Dou E compares it to when the prince of Yan was imprisoned on the strength of an enemys accusation, Zou Yan cried to heaven, which showed displeasure by bringing frost in midsummer. The snow that is falling now will supposedly show the injustice done to Dou E.

Dou E then confesses to murdering Zhang to keep her mother in law from getting beaten. She is thrown into the gaol and the next day she is to be executed. Her mother in law blames herself for Dou E's punishment. Dou E is led of after saying "How could I save you except by dying myself?" She was willing to die for her mother in law to live.

Snow in Midsummer 448-450 [12-15-2011]

Today I read pages 448 - 450 of Snow in Midsummer. Donkey goes to the doctor to get poison so he can kill Mrs. Cai. The reason is because if Mrs. Cai is dead social and economic necessity will force Dou E to accept Donkey as her husband. Which, as of right now, Dou E is completely against. The doctor gives Donkey the poison because Donkey threatened to take the doctor to court after seeing him try to murder Mrs. Cai unless he gives him the poison. Dou E recites a monologue talking about how a lot of women just want a husband and don't want to work. She also talks about how the women start living through their husbands as they gossip about their adventures that their significant others had taken. Dou E also told the story of Meng Jiang-nu. Meng's husband died while building the great wall and she went to the wall to find her missing husband. Apparently she cried so hard that part of the wall collapsed revealing his dead body. Dou E was trying to compare woman who were so loyal to their husband to the woman currently. "How shameful that women today are so unfaithful-" The women today become widows and worry about finding a new husband while the woman she praises became widows and remained faithful to their husband that had died.
